Are You Prepared? A California-Specific Guide to Emergency Readiness

Are You Prepared? A California-Specific Guide to Emergency Readiness

National Preparedness Month | Boyd & Associates

September marks National Preparedness Month, a nationwide reminder that emergencies don’t wait for the right moment—they can happen at any time. And in California, being prepared isn’t optional—it’s essential. With threats like earthquakes, wildfires, power outages, and even coastal tsunamis, every household and business should have a plan in place tailored to our state’s unique risks.

At Boyd & Associates, we believe that readiness is protection. Below are key steps you can take today to help protect what matters most—your family, your home, and your peace of mind.

Wildfire Readiness: Defensible Space & Early Detection

Wildfires can spark with little warning and move fast. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Create defensible space by clearing flammable vegetation at least 30 feet from your home
  • Install ember-resistant vents and use fire-resistant materials for roofing and siding
  • Keep a “go-bag” with essentials near your front door
  • Use environmental monitoring systems that alert you to extreme heat or smoke buildup inside your home

Boyd & Associates offers 24/7 monitored sensors that can detect changes in temperature and air quality before a small issue becomes a disaster.

Earthquake Preparedness: Expect the Unexpected

Earthquakes strike without warning. Are you ready to react?

  • Anchor heavy furniture and appliances to prevent injuries during shaking
  • Keep flashlights, water, and shoes by every bed
  • Know how to shut off gas lines and utilities
  • Have a communication plan in case cell service is down
  • Store a grab-and-go emergency kit in your car or garage

A security system with backup power and smart automation can help you stay connected—even when the grid goes down.

Tsunami & Coastal Threats: Know Your Zone

For those living near the coast, tsunami preparedness is a must:

  • Check your address against local tsunami evacuation zone maps
  • Know your fastest evacuation route
  • Keep important documents sealed and stored in waterproof containers
  • Sign up for local emergency alerts on your mobile device

Security doesn’t stop at your front door—being informed and mobile-ready is key.

Build Your Emergency Kit

Every household and workplace should have an emergency kit with enough supplies for at least 72 hours. Include:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Flashlights & extra batteries
  • First aid supplies
  • Medication
  • Copies of important documents
  • Cash, phone chargers, and a whistle
  • Dust masks and hygiene items

Refresh and restock your kit at least once a year—and don’t forget supplies for pets and young children.

CPR Training: A Life-Saving Skill

Whether at home or in the workplace, at least one person should be CPR-certified. In an emergency, first responders may not arrive immediately, and CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

Many local fire departments, Red Cross locations, and community centers offer affordable or even free training.

Don’t Just Plan—Practice

Emergency readiness isn’t just about having supplies—it’s about knowing how to use them. Run family drills. Practice evacuations at your business. Test your security and alarm systems monthly. And most importantly, keep communication lines open with neighbors, employees, and loved ones.

At Boyd & Associates, Your Safety Comes First

Our team is here to help you prepare—not only for intruders, but for the unexpected. With smart home automation, environmental monitoring, 24/7 emergency response, and expert guidance, we’re committed to protecting what matters most.
