Protect Yourself from Tax Season Scams

March 10, 2025/in Personal, safety tips/by Boyd Security

Tax season isn’t just about filing returns—it’s also prime time for scammers trying to steal personal and financial information. From phishing emails to fake IRS calls, tax fraud can have serious consequences. At Boyd & Associates, we’re here to help you stay informed and secure.

Phishing Emails & Fake IRS Messages
Scammers pose as the IRS or tax companies, sending emails claiming issues with your return or promising refunds.

• The IRS never contacts taxpayers via email, text, or social media.
• Watch for urgent language, suspicious links, and unfamiliar sender addresses.
• Never click links—go directly to www.irs.gov to check your tax status.

Fraudulent IRS Phone Calls
Scammers impersonate IRS agents, demanding immediate payment and using threats to pressure victims.

•The IRS will never call to demand payment or threaten arrest.
• Requests for gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or wire transfers are red flags.
• Hang up and report the call to TIGTA at 1-800-366-4484.

Fake Tax Preparers
Some scammers pose as professionals, promising big refunds while stealing your information.

• A legitimate preparer has a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) and signs your return.
• Never sign a blank tax return or allow your refund to be deposited into someone else’s account.
• Verify tax preparers through the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers.

How to Protect Your Information
1. File Early
Filing sooner helps prevent identity thieves from using your Social Security number to file a fraudulent return.

2. Use Secure Platforms
Only file taxes through reputable IRS-approved e-filing services, avoid public Wi-Fi, and enable two-factor authentication.

3. Secure Your Documents
Shred old tax paperwork and store important records in a locked, safe place.

4. Monitor Your Accounts
Check bank statements and credit reports for suspicious activity. If you suspect fraud:

• Contact the IRS Identity Protection Unit at 1-800-908-4490.
• File an IRS Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit).
• Place a fraud alert with Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion.

Stay Secure This Tax Season
Tax season should be about filing returns, not fighting scams. Stay informed, protect your information, and take proactive steps to safeguard your financial security.

At Boyd & Associates, we believe security goes beyond your home—it includes protecting your identity and personal data. Stay vigilant and don’t let scammers take advantage this tax season.
