The Risks of Hiding Spare Keys & Smarter Alternatives

April 24, 2025/in Uncategorized/by Boyd Security

Having a spare key can be convenient, but where you keep it can make all the difference between security and vulnerability. Many homeowners hide spare keys outside their homes for easy access, but criminals know exactly where to look. Instead of putting your property at risk, consider smarter, safer alternatives for key access.

Why Hiding Spare Keys Is a Security Risk

Burglars are well aware of common hiding spots for spare keys, making it easy for them to gain access to your home. Here’s why traditional key-hiding methods are unsafe:

  • Obvious Hiding Spots – Under the doormat, inside the mailbox, beneath a flowerpot, or on top of the door frame are the first places intruders check.
  • Patterns Over Time – If you regularly retrieve your hidden key, a burglar watching your home may notice.
  • Key Duplication – If someone with bad intentions finds your key, they can easily make a copy and return later.
  • No Control Over Who Finds It – Even if you think your hiding spot is clever, a passerby or even a neighbor may come across it accidentally.

Leaving a spare key outside is a risk that could make your home an easy target. Instead, consider these smarter alternatives.

Safer Alternatives to Hiding Spare Keys

If you need a backup key, there are secure ways to keep access without compromising your home’s safety.

1. Use a Keyless Entry System

A smart lock eliminates the need for physical keys altogether. With a keypad, fingerprint scanner, or smartphone-controlled access, you can unlock your door securely and even grant temporary access codes to visitors when needed.

2. Install a Lockbox

A wall-mounted or combination lockbox is a secure alternative to leaving a key under a doormat. These durable, weatherproof boxes provide access only to those who know the combination, making it much harder for someone to find and use your spare key.

3. Give a Spare Key to a Trusted Neighbor or Family Member

If you need an emergency backup, leaving a key with a trusted neighbor, close friend, or family member is a much safer option than hiding it outside. Choose someone who lives nearby and can quickly provide access when needed.

4. Use a Smart Doorbell or Security System

A smart doorbell camera allows you to see who is at your door and even communicate with visitors remotely. Some systems integrate with smart locks, letting you unlock the door from your phone when needed, eliminating the need for spare keys.

5. Hide a Key Inside a Secure Outdoor Location

If you must store a spare key outside, opt for a discreet, secure location far from the front door. Consider placing it in a locked shed, a waterproof container buried in an unlikely spot, or another area not easily accessible to passersby. However, this method still carries risk and should only be used as a last resort.

Keep Your Home Secure

A hidden key may seem like a convenient backup plan, but it can put your home at serious risk. With today’s smart security solutions and safe alternatives, there’s no need to take the chance.
